How do I know I have fungal nails?

You may have noticed changes in the texture, quality and colour of the nail. Typical first signs are a yellowing or brown discolouring, nails may become thick and brittle. Some can be distorted and may lift from the nail bed and there is a loss of healthy shine...

Fungal nail infections

Fungal nail is caused by fungi that naturally live on our skin. When trauma to the nail occurs the fungi can invade under the nail plate. Fungi thrive in the warm moist environment causing damage - mainly affects big toes but all are vulnerable.

Fungal nail tests

Some nail conditions can be similar in appearance to fungal nails, for example, psoriasis. Due to this a fungal nail test has to be done to make sure Lacuna treatment is appropriate.

This can be done by your GP who will send affected nail clippings to the lab.
This takes approx. a month and is only about 50% accurate.

Your alternative is the Dermatophyte (fungi) strip test which can be offered now at Johnston's clinic by our trained consultant Catherine. This takes approx. 5 minutes and is 97% accurate.

The cost will be £35.00

Please note:

Before Lacuna treatment can commence a definite diagnosis of fungal presence has to be established.

There are many types of products available over the counter and via your GP to treat fungal nails. However, apart from oral Terbinafine (GP prescription-only - unpopular due to side effects) - they have to be applied on the nail surface, therefore, reducing their efficiency.

How Lacuna will help me?

Fungal nail infection is difficult to treat as most tropical agents are ineffective at penetrating the nail plate to reach the active infection on the nail bed. However, by using the Lacuna method drilling micro-holes will enable you to apply an anti-fungal agent which will spread under the nail when you walk the fungus is then stopped from spreading any further.
